Episode the first: Gettting Our Bearings
Who? What? Me? Which one do I roll?

The first installment of our adventure finds 4 Elves in Fallcrest, looking for some adventure. Ok, not quite, but you’ll understand.

Ravalore, and Lorna, their Elf friend Chukkar, and lastly the 1/64th Elf Dwarf Ironheart. I can’t go into much detail, but it’s cultural thing for him.

4 newbies with a DM that hasn’t seen action in over 15 years.

The trip from Fallcrest to Winterhaven in pursuit of a potential death cult, with some Kobold raiders on the way got some of the RPG and Game mechanics out on the table. Despite some moments there wasn’t too much on the trip that the stuff of legends. That will wait for episode two.*

Episode the Second: Interns.
Cramps you say?

Episode two begins at the inn in Winterhaven. Our band returns from the dragon burial site, short one dwarf, but up one strikingly attractive amulet and a chest being floated along by our wizardy Eladrin. Sadly, after having ended up with a dead hostage at the burial site, we discovered that several members of the community in Winterhaven were aligned with dark – nay – culty forces. Our work would be difficult.

In an attempt to cure ourselves of the ills of our previous encounter, we worked to get off to a hot start on this adventure, only to find one of our players, er, characters was unable to continue on with us today. A certain Ravalore was found doubled over in search of the D&D version of Midol, and was left at the hotel with some chicken soup and a warm water wineskin. Tunneldark himself attempted to roll some ibuprofin, but the local innkeeper was puzzled by the attempt. Alas, her player will be back for the next installment (we hope) but that all depends on wether his wife and renovations will permit it. That’s right. You heard me.

So our band of four three found a few unique patrons in the inn bar, and took them on as interns for the days adventure after finding them contemplating a similar quest. Both L2 characters were fully rolled, and as such became PC characters alongside our band of 3.

Our first skirmish came on the kings road at the hands of a band of Kobolds, who displayed an uncanny desire to trash one of the interns. A death, saving throws, healing hands, and some deft conjuring later the band was dispatched with our DM laughing at our near heroic efforts to save the intern. Her abilities tend to the vs. Reflex type and provided us some great longer range attack opportunities. She’ll be valuable, but after the first encounter it was clear that she may be no more than fodder in future encounters. Hopefully that isn’t so as her bag of tricks include a few daily powers that will come in handy during the final stages.

After a short rest™ the band ventured forth toward the Kobold lair. Our element of surprise was up in the first turn. Through sheer luck, we managed to dispatch a number of minions with near effortless rolls. Not so much for Deborah Poochbottom. After her early skirting of death she was a mere two-punch to saving throws yet again and served as a liability despite a few handily dispatched minions. She did NOT share in the XP gained during the encounter.

Lorna (Lourana / Sheniqua / Tamika / Whatever) threw waves of Eladrin sorcery connecting many times, and fired many magic missiles, but it was Little Chukkar Norris who really stole the limelight. Effortless clever shots and Aimed shots through the bush knocked out more than a few minions, however in the fight a skirmisher was able to slip out and (we believe) warn the kobolds at their lair of our approach. In the end though, that skirmisher was punished heartily with a double flank as Ironheart cleaved his lizard head in two.

Beaten, and thrashed, our band retreated to Winterhaven to rest and recoup before we attempt to broach the Kobold Lair on another day. We will seize victory – but who will fall?

Episode the third: The Death of Poochbottom
Halfling be gone.

For the second episode in a row, 4Elvin was forced to make do with our interns on an encounter. This episode (3) we finally forced our way into the Kobold Lair after Irontooth.

Ravalore (our less trusty Elvin fighter) was still back at the hotel, presumably overcome by the vapors – more on that later. We ventured forth to the Lair with our trusty band of 5, including two interns. Krissana and Deborah Poochbottom (both level 2) helped Chukkar, Lourananaaana (Sheniqua whatever) and Ironheart get a handle on the small band of guards outside the waterfall.

While easy fodder we all took a few good hits on account of rolling like Jerry Holkins. After the inital force was overcome, Lorna (Loranahandawhatever) was forced to return to Winterhaven. It was explained that since her player was required to flip burgers and sling fries, she simply couldn’t take part in the raid on the Lair behind the waterfall. In retrospect, her fervent desire to return to Winterhaven makes more sense. With Ravalove, er, Ravalore back at the hotel it became clear that there was more to the pair than met the eyes.

However, we digress. As a result, rather than sissy-out, 1 and 1/64th Elven broke the seal as a group, only to find a party waiting inside. Ironheart had sent word prior to our departure from Winterhaven to his cousin Morgran – also 1/64th elf – to come at once in case the interns turned useless. With that knowledge in hand, the band of 4 pressed on. To suggest that the battle was even would be unfair. The band was faced with over twice our numbers, minion, skirmisher, warrior, wyrmpriest, and worst – Irontooth. All this while we were rolling like Holkins,
Tunneldark tried to look chill but he wasn’t having any of it. The battle was fierce, and despite a number of crit 20’s – it happened.

Yes – there were a few bodies on the ground. All in varying states of screwed. With a merciful DM at the helm, we were able to eek out a single heal to our L2 cleric. She stood, closed her eyes and sent healing vibes to Ironheart, bringing him to 1hp, before taking another shot to the head with a javelin.

The next few turns played out something like this…

Sensing impending death due to Chukkar’s two failed saves, and not a single effort to stand up by any healed being, the kobolds – all beaten to some degree, retreated deeper into the lair. Once out of sight, Ironheart and the remaining two 4Elveners quietly and bloodily got to their feet, slipped through the waterfall and into the woods.

What’s that? Only Three? That’s right. Poochbottom was lost. The object of our DM’s affection for several encounters now – he was finally graced with a true player kill. Well earned DM. Well earned.

Standing in guard shifts through the night, the band of three was able to heal enough for a morning assault, waiting just long enough to hear the pitter patter of little Dwarven feet through the clearing! Morgran Darkfell – Paladin Dwarf cousin of Ironheart broke through the trees ready to stand with his Elven (ok somewhat Elven) brothers in a final assault on the Kobold lair!

With more than a little flair – and even more than a lot of Laying of Hands and Healing strikes, the remaining 5 enemies numbered just one.

Irontooth – on the run.

With some exceptional Clever shots Chukkar was able to keep Irontooth prone while the remaining players pummeled him with round after round of +6 vs. AC attacks and taking pissant damage (save for several attacks while Ironheart attempted again to play possum and got his shit kicked over and over), turn after turn.

In the end however it was Irontooth who paid the price.

One and 1/32nd Elven survived! (Short one intern, but up one new cousintern.)

Episode the fourth: Dungeoneering with Rookies
Chukkar has them woman pains.

Our fourth installment begins with the head of Irontooth, delivered to the Lord of Winterhaven. Our next challenge, despite the overwhelming danger – is to penetrate the Keep. Tales of Cultists and the undead fill our band with dread. So much so that our trusty archer Chukkar Norris seems to be afflicted with some form of cramping and is forced to retire to his room at Salvana Wraftons inn.

We leave him a note, letting him know where we’re headed and after a few moments of resupply we are off to the keep. Lorna too seems taken with some stomach ailment and is unable to venture to the keep with us. They are sworn to follow in 1 day if we do not return. Ravalore now fully healed from her elven Pon Farr is back, and we take on yet another intern at the tavern. A rogue with a penchant for the dark side. Deadnaught is her name, and she promises to be good. Or, at least not bad.

We take the road north to the keep and after an uneventful journey reach the ruins of the keep.

Ironheart of course, stout of build, and short of clue steps first into the pit trap. A heave-ho and a solid athletics check later, he is out of the rat pit unscathed. Goblins toss spears at the dwarf, only to be caught in mid-air, and tossed into the pit.

Shortly thereafter our band finds itself in a tomb chamber battling undead skeletons, only to meet Sir Keegan face to um, mist. With some fast talking, a pile of re-dead undead, and solid strategy – the band finds itself under Keegans protection for the night, and a trusty Dwarf holding Aecris – the magical sword.

Our delve took a great deal of time due to much democracy, but ended up in only a few rooms with solid battles and a sword boon. Onward and downward perhaps after a good nights sleep.
